When looking for the best Paris neighborhoods for families, one of the first questions I get from families is “Which neighborhood should we stay in?” And it’s actually one of the most important decisions you’ll make because where you stay shapes your entire experience.
After years of designing tailor-made itineraries for families visiting Paris, I’ve seen firsthand which neighborhoods work beautifully for kids and which ones lead to exhausted parents and cranky children. Here’s my honest local comparison.
Best Paris Neighborhoods for Families : What to Look For ?
Before diving in, here’s what I look for when recommending a neighborhood to families with kids:
- Proximity to major attractions (less time in transit = happier kids)
- Green spaces and parks within walking distance
- Safe, walkable streets especially important with strollers
- Good restaurant options that genuinely welcome children
- Reasonable accommodation prices (Paris is expensive location matters)
- Easy Metro or RER access
I’ll rate each neighborhood on these criteria so you can find the best match for your family. These are my top picks for the best Paris neighborhoods for families :
1. Le Marais (3rd & 4th Arrondissement) The Most Balanced Choice
Le Marais is consistently my top recommendation for families visiting Paris for the first time. It strikes the perfect balance between central location, charm, and practicality.
Why families love it:
- Walking distance from Notre-Dame, the Pompidou Centre, and Place des Vosges
- Place des Vosges the oldest square in Paris has a beautiful garden where kids can run freely
- The Jewish Quarter (Rue des Rosiers) offers some of the best falafel in Paris kids universally love it
- Mostly flat and very walkable, great for strollers
- Wide variety of accommodation from budget to luxury
Family scorecard:
Location: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Dead center, everything is walkable
Green spaces: ⭐⭐⭐ Place des Vosges is lovely but limited
Kid-friendly restaurants: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent variety and range of prices
Walkability: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Flat, wide streets, stroller-friendly
Value: ⭐⭐⭐ Mid-range not cheap but not outrageous
🇫🇷 Local tip: Stay near Place des Vosges if you can. In the morning before tourists arrive, it’s one of the most magical spots in Paris and your kids will have the fountain square almost to themselves.
2. Montmartre (18th Arrondissement) Charming but Challenging
Montmartre is one of the most photogenic neighborhoods in Paris, and many families are drawn to its village-like atmosphere and the iconic Sacré-Cœur basilica. But I always give families an honest warning before recommending it.
Why families love it:
- Incredibly picturesque cobblestone streets, artists, vineyard
- Sacré-Cœur is breathtaking and free to enter
- More affordable accommodation than central Paris
- Feels like a village within the city very charming
The honest downsides for families:
- Very hilly exhausting with young children or strollers
- Further from main attractions you’ll spend more time in the Metro
- The main tourist strip (Place du Tertre) is overcrowded and overpriced
- Some streets around Pigalle nearby can feel uncomfortable at night
Family scorecard:
Location: ⭐⭐ Far from most major attractions
Green spaces: ⭐⭐⭐ Square Louise Michel below Sacré-Cœur
Kid-friendly restaurants: ⭐⭐⭐ Good local options away from tourist traps
Walkability: ⭐⭐ Beautiful but very hilly tough with kids
Value: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ More affordable than central Paris
🇫🇷 Local tip: If you stay in Montmartre, take the funicular (cable car) up to Sacré-Cœur kids love it and it’s included with a Metro ticket. Avoid the tourist restaurants on Place du Tertre entirely.
3. Saint-Germain-des-Prés (6th Arrondissement) Beautiful but Pricey
Saint-Germain is one of the most elegant neighborhoods in Paris famous cafés, boutiques, and the Luxembourg Garden. For families with a generous budget, it can be wonderful. But it comes with trade-offs.
Why families love it:
- Jardin du Luxembourg is arguably the best park in Paris for children puppet shows, pony rides, model sailboats
- Very safe, clean, and upscale neighborhood
- Walking distance from the Louvre, Musée d’Orsay, and Notre-Dame
- Excellent restaurants and bakeries
The honest downsides:
- One of the most expensive neighborhoods in Paris for accommodation
- Restaurants can be very pricey harder to eat affordably with a family
- Less ‘authentic’ Parisian feel very polished and touristy
Family scorecard:
Location: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Central, walking distance from top museums
Green spaces: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Luxembourg Garden is world-class for kids
Kid-friendly restaurants: ⭐⭐⭐ Excellent quality but expensive
Walkability: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Flat, beautiful, very safe
Value: ⭐ One of the most expensive areas in Paris
🇫🇷 Local tip: Even if you don’t stay here, spend a morning at the Jardin du Luxembourg it’s the ultimate Parisian family experience. The puppet shows (Guignol) run on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
4. Bastille & Oberkampf (11th Arrondissement) The Local’s Choice
This is where many Parisians with young families actually live and for good reason. The 11th arrondissement offers authentic Parisian life at more reasonable prices, with excellent amenities for families. It’s the best Paris neighborhood for families on a budget.
Why families love it:
- Very lively, authentic neighborhood real Parisian daily life
- Excellent local restaurants and markets at reasonable prices
- Close to the Marais and easy Metro access everywhere
- Coulée Verte (elevated park/walkway) a hidden gem perfect for kids
- More affordable than central Paris
The honest downsides:
- Less immediately ‘postcard Paris’ than Marais or Saint-Germain
- Nightlife area can be noisy on weekends
Family scorecard:
Location: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great Metro access, 15min from center
Green spaces: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Coulée Verte is a fantastic hidden gem
Kid-friendly restaurants: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent local options at good prices
Walkability: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Flat and pleasant
Value: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Best value among central neighborhoods
🇫🇷 Local tip: The Marché d’Aligre (Tuesday-Sunday mornings) is a 10-minute walk from Bastille a fantastic authentic Paris market experience that kids love. One of my personal favorites.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which Paris neighborhood is safest for families with kids?
All the neighborhoods I’ve listed above are very safe for families. Paris is generally a safe city for tourists. The areas to be more cautious about are around Gare du Nord and certain parts of the 18th arrondissement away from Montmartre but none of my recommendations fall into those areas.
Should we stay in a hotel or apartment in Paris with kids?
With children, I almost always recommend renting an apartment. You’ll have a kitchen (huge for breakfast and snacks), more space, a washing machine, and a much more comfortable base for your family. Airbnb and Booking.com both have excellent options across all these neighborhoods.
How do we get around Paris with young children?
For families with kids under 10, I recommend a mix of walking and Metro. Children under 4 travel free on the Metro. For toddlers, note that many Metro stations don’t have elevators the RER and buses are more stroller-friendly. I always include transport tips in my custom itineraries.
Which neighborhood is best for families visiting Paris for the first time?
Le Marais, without hesitation. It puts you within walking distance of the most iconic sights, has excellent food options at all price points, and is completely flat and stroller-friendly. It’s also genuinely beautiful your kids will feel like they’re in a fairy tale.
